Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single-line tattoo of a cat face with two pointed ears and short whiskers sits on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and black, with no shading, and the design is set against plain grey background. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo, with the hand and a patterned sleeve visible at the edges.

Dora had the mop bucket half full when the cat came in through the fire door, the way he did every Saturday, as though the Palais owed him a key. He was ginger gone grey at the chin, with one notch out of his left ear, and he never danced. He sat at the edge of the sprung maple floor and watched feet. Ray on the drums called him the Inspector because he judged every quickstep with those narrowed eyes. Nobody knew whose he was. Dora fed him fish heads from the chip shop on Canal Row, and he allowed it, the way the ballroom allowed the damp to climb its walls.

The hall was to come down on the Monday. A man from the council had pinned a notice to the cloakroom door, and the last dance was sold out, every ticket gone to people who wanted one more waltz under the mirror ball. That night, after the coats had gone and the bandstand lights were dark, Dora turned the big switches off one at a time. The cat stepped out onto the empty floor in a straight line, past a thousand old chalk marks where heels had landed, and sat in the centre where the ball threw its small stars.

She fetched the chalk from her apron pocket and drew a careful ring around him, then another, until he sat inside a wobbly moon with his whiskers fanned out past the lines. He did not move. Neither did she, for a while. In the morning the council man would find a floor full of white circles and a cat asleep in the middle of them, and he would stand a long time looking before he decided it was not his business to wake either of them.
