Bad Wolf lettering on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand and wrist with the sleeve of a light blue denim jacket rolled up. The tattoo reads BAD WOLF in small, bold black capitals with simple, uniform linework. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the wrist fills the left and centre of the frame against a plain background.

Dear Nell,

The Bad Wolf came in on Tuesday with her hold half full of pollack and the engine coughing like Mr Pryce's old Morris. Dad told me to stop daydreaming on the quay and go and help Arthur with the nets, so I did, and I'm writing this sat on an upturned crab pot with my boots full of sea, because you asked me to tell you everything and nothing happens here that isn't fish.
Arthur has painted the name on the wheelhouse again. He did it with a brush he bought off the chandler in Lowestoft, and the letters are a bit fat in places, but he says that's how the wolf likes them. Nobody on the fleet knows which wolf he means. Dad says it's a yarn from his granddad, about a boat that went out in a blow and came back with its crew alive and the nets full, and the skipper swore the wind had been chasing it like a dog that couldn't catch what it wanted.
Yesterday the sea went flat as a plate for the first time since March, and we drifted with the lines out and nobody talked. Arthur pulled a folded square of paper from his oilskin and showed me a sketch of the same black capitals, and asked whether I'd ever seen a name that looked more like a warning than a boat. I said it looked like something you'd stamp on a crate. He laughed so hard he nearly went over the side.
Come home at Christmas, and bring that book about the lighthouse. I'll meet the train at Halesworth. Your loving brother, Tom.
