GRL PWR lettering on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the text GRL PWR in small, plain block capitals tattooed on the inner forearm, set against a dark, low-contrast background. The lettering is crisp and solid, with a simple monochrome finish. The tattoo sits off-centre in the frame, with a necklace and part of the wearer's body visible at the top edge.

Dear Jade,

Your mum rang to say you've been sulking since the debate, so I'm writing a proper letter, the kind with a stamp. It's gone three in the morning on Ward 9 and the corridor lights are dimmed to that bluish colour that makes everyone look like an old photograph of themselves. Mrs Okafor in bed four has been counting her tablets out loud since midnight, and I've let her, because nobody else is awake to argue with her.

Something you'll like: this week Precious, one of the healthcare assistants, went round the staff room with a black marker and wrote on the lockers in capitals. Most say things like PUT THE KETTLE ON or WHOSE TEA IS THIS. Mine says GRL PWR, shortened because she ran out of room, and when Sister Hadley told her it wasn't clinical, Precious said neither was the rota, and Sister Hadley laughed so hard she had to sit down on the linen trolley. The word stayed. Nobody has had the nerve to scrub it off.

You told your teacher the argument was about who gets listened to, and you were right. I want you to remember that the people who matter most in any room are usually the ones who are quietest about it, the ones checking the drips and the paperwork while everyone else talks. Be loud when it counts, though. Write your points in capitals, big enough for the back row to read without squinting.

I'm on nights until Thursday. If the phone goes at three, it's probably Mrs Okafor wanting her tablets counted again, and I'll tell her you said hello.

Love, Aunt Maureen
