Bake and destroy baking tools banner on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a whisk above a rolling pin crossing a cluster of red berries, with a brown and green ribbon banner across the centre reading BAKE AND DESTROY. The linework is bold and black, with solid fills and simple shading on the tools and banners. The palette is mainly red, brown, pink and green, and the design is framed closely on the forearm against a white textured surface.

Mab Tolley had cooked aboard the collier Hesper for nineteen years, and in all that time the sea had never once been pleased with her. It took the flour when the hatch leaked, it took the pewter when the ship rolled, and in the autumn of the great blow it tipped the berry jam off the shelf and sloshed it across the deck. The men wanted to pray. Mab wanted her dinner.

So she shut the galley door, tied her apron tight, and sent the ship's boy for the whisk, the rolling pin and every red berry left in the barrel. She beat the eggs until the whisk sang. She rolled the pastry thin as a gull's wing, folded it over the fruit, and pressed the edges shut with her thumb. Then she set the tray in the oven and told the boy to keep the door closed, whatever the wind said.
When the bread came out, the sea had gone as quiet as a churchyard. The boy swore the waves had sat down to eat. Mab cut the first pie into eleven slices, one for each man on the watch and one left on the sill for whatever wanted it. Nobody ever agreed on what the sea ate that night, but by morning the crew had painted BAKE AND DESTROY over the galley door in tar and red lead, and it has stayed there since.
