Marjorie came into the shop every Thursday at ten past six and asked for the end piece of the slice, the blistered crust that everyone else pushed to the side of the plate. For years I assumed she was thrifty. Then one Thursday she set a length of pink satin ribbon on the counter, the sort that comes round wedding favours, and asked if I had the marker we used for the specials board.

I wrote PIZZA MY HEART in capitals because my handwriting goes to pieces when I try anything joined up, and she laughed so hard the woman from the chemist next door came in to see what the noise was. Marjorie wound the ribbon round the slice like a bandage and tapped the crust with one nail. "Take another little, Stan," she said, "and don't you dare tell me it's the last one."

She didn't come in the following Thursday, or the one after. On the third Thursday a young man with her chin and a shoebox under his arm stood at the till and said his aunt had asked him to bring me something. Inside the box was a stack of recipe cards in her looping hand, and on top, a note: The crust is yours to keep, you always did eat it wrong.

I cut a slice that evening, the way she liked it, and ate the blistered end standing at the counter. Then I tied the pink ribbon round the rest and hung it in the window, where the light from the street could get at the grease and make it shine.
