Black and grey realistic tattoo of a waving flag with stars and stripes on a forearm, shaded to show folds in the fabric.

Waving flag on a forearm in black and grey

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic tattoo of a waving flag covers the forearm, with a field of white stars in the upper left and stripes running down the right. The shading creates soft folds and highlights that give the fabric a sense of movement. The image is in black and grey, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a blurred dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The landlord wanted the stars to catch the light, so I spent a whole wet Tuesday with the loft doors open, sewing the last of the hems on a flag that had been up a pole at the Gull and Anchor since the spring gales. Old Jessop, who ran the sail loft before me, used to say a flag tells you how hard the wind's been by where it's frayed. This one had gone soft along the top edge, the cotton worn thin where the halyard had slapped it all winter.

I laid it across the cutting table and smoothed the folds with the flat of my hand. Grey light came through the skylight and lay on the white bands in long, uneven strips, so every ridge looked as if a thumb had pressed it. I did not hurry. Jessop had taught me that the stitching has to look as though the cloth is still moving even when it is lying flat.

When I had finished, I carried it down to the quay myself. The landlord, a man with flour on his cuffs, stood with his hands in his pockets while I clipped it on. Then the wind came off the water, filled the fabric all at once, and the whole thing lifted and cracked like a sheet on a line. He took his hands out of his pockets and said nothing for a while.

"Good," he said eventually. "That's the sound it used to make."

I went back up the hill with spare thread in my coat. Jessop's bench was still by the window, and I left the loft doors open behind me, the way he always did, so the wind could come in and see what it had done.
