Realistic waving American flag on shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large tattoo of a waving American flag covers the shoulder and upper arm, with the blue canton and white stars at the top left and red and white stripes running down and across. The flag has soft folds and grey shading that give it a three-dimensional, cloth-like appearance. The photo is taken indoors in a chair, with the person's face cropped out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

It had rained on the Thursday market for three weeks, and Ada Penrose had sold no cloth in any of them. Her stall stood under the iron arch by the fish sheds, where the water ran off the canvas in ropes. Nobody stopped to finger a bolt of wool when they could stand and drip instead.

On the fourth Thursday a tall man in a grey coat put a folded length on her trestle and said it had been waiting for wind. It was red and white in long bands, with a field of blue in one corner dotted with small pale stars. She told him it was a strange thing to sell in a town that only had weather. He said the cloth did not need a sky. It needed someone to hold it up and let go.

She shook it out. The moment it left her hands the cloth lifted, though there was no wind under the arch, and rolled itself over the fish sheds and back again like a sail finding a breath. The stripes rippled and dimmed where the shadow ran through them. Old stallholders came to watch, and the rain stopped falling on that one patch of the market.

When the cloth settled, the man was gone, and the stars had slid down out of the blue corner and gathered at the edge where a hand would hold it. Ada kept the length folded in her lap until the market closed. She never sold it. She hung it in her window at home, and after that the rain did not come in.
