Ball of yarn and knitting needles on a shoulder
Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A ball of pink and magenta yarn is pierced by two blue knitting needles, with loose loops of thread drawn in fine black outline around it. The design is outlined in black with coloured fills and light shading on the yarn, with small yellow accents near the bottom. The tattoo sits centre-frame on the shoulder, with a strand of black beads across the neck and upper chest in the background.

The sand came over the Tarrow road like grey milk the night the lorry's lamps failed, and Ida Cole, who lived alone in the last stone house before the flats, heard the engine stutter and then stop. She had no telephone and no torch worth lighting. What she had was a ball of plum-coloured wool, two blue needles her husband had whittled from a broom handle, and forty years of knowing that a man lost in the dark will walk towards anything that stays put.

She sat on the step and knitted. Each row she drew a little thread from the ball and laid it out across the sand, the way her mother had taught her to tie a line for the goats. The wool went out in a long pink loop that caught on the lorry's wheel, wound round the tall dead saguaro and snagged on the signpost that had lost its arm. The driver, a boy named Teodor with a cough and a tin of mints, found it first. He followed it by feel, hand over hand, the way a child follows a kite string home.
Ida knitted until her fingers split and the needles went cold. Near dawn the thread ran back to her gatepost, where she had tied the end. Teodor came up the line with sand in his hair, sat down beside her, and asked what she had been making. She turned the half-finished square over in her lap. "A road," she said. "Only it isn't finished yet."
