Balloon house with Adventure banner design
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A small house with a blue roof hangs beneath a large bunch of multicoloured balloons, with a pastel ribbon banner across the lower half reading Adventure is out there in black script. The linework is dark and outlined, with the balloons and banner shaded in soft layers of colour on a plain brown kraft paper background.

Agnes Tulley had pegged out washing for forty years without losing a sock to the wind, right up until the morning the balloons came over the back fence. They arrived at half past seven, a bunch so wide it blotted out the shed roof, and beneath them swung a small house with a blue roof, a crooked chimney and a red front door someone had painted in a hurry.

"Don't just stand there gawping," called Len from over the hedge. He had been a postman for thirty years and held firm opinions about anything that arrived by air. "It's been trying to land since Thursday." Agnes pulled on her gardening gloves. The house bumped against the greenhouse gutter and let fall a pastel ribbon that unrolled across the lawn like a banner at a village fête. Someone had written on it, in looping black script she could read from the kitchen window, that adventure was out there.
They spent the afternoon untangling strings from the plum tree. Len held the ladder, Agnes snipped, and the house swayed over the rhubarb as if it were considering the matter. Each time they nearly let go, the bunch tugged upward, impatient, its colours flickering like sweets in a jar. By teatime the house was secured to the washing line with three knots Agnes had learned from her father on a Grimsby trawler.
That evening she sat on the back step with a cup of tea going cold and watched the house drift a foot above the lawn, its one lit window glowing. Len asked whether she meant to keep it. She looked at her runner beans, then at the sky over the reservoir, and found she was already reaching for her coat. "Hold the ladder one more time," she said. "Undo the bottom knot by the gate. I've been meaning to see the sea for twenty years, and this seems as good a way as any to get there."
