Small feather tattoo on an ankle with a purple heel

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a bare foot in a purple satin high-heeled sandal, with purple cord wrapping around the ankle and gold tassels hanging from the straps. A small grey feather or wing shape sits on the ankle, rendered in soft shaded greys. The background is a blurred purple printed fabric above a pale floor, and the tattoo is a minor detail within the shoe-focused composition.

The cord had to be purple before it could be anything else, and Ada Penrose had spent three weeks coaxing the dye into the silk. The order came from a house in Milan that never said who the shoes were for, only that the straps must bind the ankle twice and the tassels must hang heavy enough to swing when a foot turned.

She kept a grey feather pinned above her bench, a jay's, picked off the towpath the spring her brother went to sea. Each morning it caught the window light and she took that as permission to keep twisting. The gold tassels came from a wire-drawer in Birmingham who made them so fine she could see the lamp through them, and he charged her for every thread he wasted.

When the sandals were done she wrapped them in tissue and posted them south without a note. Six weeks later a postcard arrived with a photograph of a hem, purple and blurred, sweeping over a pale floor. Somebody had stepped out in her straps and let the gold swing free. Ada studied it at the bench for a long time, then unpinned the feather and bound it into the last spare length of cord.

She wound that cord round her own wrist, pinned the empty space above the bench where the feather had been, and reached for the next skein.
