Masked portrait and rolled cash on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo covers the forearm, showing a man's face in the upper section with a cloth covering the lower half. Three five-pointed stars and wisps of smoke sit beside the cloth, and a roll of banknotes is drawn near the wrist. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast in the face and soft gradients in the notes and smoke.

The bundle came across the counter wrapped in a bandana that smelled of diesel and bonfire, and Nell knew before she unfolded it that someone had paid a man to carry it rather than spend it himself. Her uncle Ray had taught her that. Money that has changed hands in a hurry is always rolled tight, he said, and never counted by the one who owns it.

The man who had brought it stood by the door of the shop on Harbour Street with his collar up. He wasn't there to pawn anything. He wanted change for a note with a face on it, and he asked for it in fives, not twenties. Nell gave him fives. Outside, the harbour lamps came on one by one, three of them stuttering like stars that could not decide whether to stay.
When the shutters were down she sat under the desk lamp and unrolled the notes slowly. They were real enough to fool a bored cashier, which was the whole trick of them. Tucked in the middle was a square of paper with three pencilled stars and a single line: Keep the smoke out of the back room. She burned the paper over the tea urn and watched the grey curl up towards the ceiling tiles, and understood that she had been chosen because she was the one who would not ask questions.
In the morning she folded the bandana into a neat square, put it in the bottom of her coat pocket, and walked it down to the sea wall. She dropped it over the rail and watched the tide take it, one small dark shape turning over and over until it was gone.
