Barcode tattoo reading TRUELOVE on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a hand held palm up, showing a black barcode tattoo on the inner wrist with the word TRUELOVE set in small capitals beneath the bars. The bars are crisp, solid black lines of varying width, and the lettering is clean and evenly spaced. The wrist sits in the foreground with the fingers blurred at the top left, and a purple tinted backdrop and bright lens flare fill the rest of the frame.

The scanner gave its flat bleep and the screen said ITEM NOT FOUND, which at ten past two on a Tuesday was the most exciting thing to happen all shift. Under the bars, somebody at the factory had printed TRUELOVE in small capitals, as if a tin of fruit needed a motto.

She rang the supervisor, who was out the back doing the bins, and he said the system would sort itself out by morning. It did not. The number matched nothing in the catalogue, so she keyed it in by hand, and the till wrote 0.00 where a price should have been. 'Pears, no charge,' she told the man when he came back, and he only nodded, as though this had been arranged years ago between him and someone she had never met.
After he left she found a box in the stockroom, pushed behind crisps that had gone out of date in the spring. Forty-eight tins, the same label, the same bars, all from a supplier that had folded the summer before. Nobody had ever sold one. Somebody had ordered them, though, and the order sheet was signed in a looping hand that matched nothing on the staff rota.
Marisol carried one tin back to the till and scanned it again. The screen flickered and, for a second, printed the line she had been waiting for: TRUELOVE, ONE, PLEASE COLLECT. She put the pears in a carrier bag, though he never took one, and set it on the counter beside the lemons for Thursday.
