Low battery icon on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small battery icon is tattooed on the wrist, drawn in a thin black outline with the battery terminal on the right. A single red block sits at the left end of the battery to show a low charge, and the rest of the interior is left as bare skin. The hand is angled across the frame against a plain, softly lit background.

The lamp room at Hollin Drift had run short of cells again, so Maggie Ropner stood at the hatch with her husband's lamp in both hands, turning it over while the clerk counted spares into a tray. Outside, the wet slag heaps steamed in the early light and the pit wheel stood silent for the first time in a month.

Gil had come home from the face on Monday with the gauge on his lamp showing its single red block, and he had laughed about it, the way he laughed at most things that frightened him. "Running on fumes," he said, then went quiet and sat at the kitchen table with the lamp in front of him until the light outside was gone. On Tuesday the men were given their notice. The gauge on that lamp was the only thing in the house that still told the truth.
The clerk slid a battery pack across the counter with a grin and no sympathy. Maggie clicked it into the housing and watched the little outline fill, bar by bar, the way it had never filled for Gil in the end. Along the street a van idled outside the Miners' Welfare, and a man in a bright jacket was unloading boxes stamped for the new distribution depot.
She carried the lamp back up the hill with the charge holding steady in her palm. At the gate she stopped and pressed her thumb against the red block, as though it could be rubbed clean. It could not. Gil was waiting in the front room for her to tell him the cells were fine, and she would tell him they were fine.
