Barcode tattoo on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black barcode tattoo with a row of printed digits beneath it, sitting on the inner forearm just above the wrist. The bars are crisp solid black lines with no shading, set against pale skin. A black wristwatch strap with a metal buckle sits beside the tattoo, and a hand is angled to the right against a dark background.

Mother Hesketh kept the bean rows in the walled garden at Lower Wick, and every seed packet she sold had a row of black stripes printed along its edge, with a line of figures beneath. Nobody in the village could say when she had started doing it. The old men said the stripes were for the crows, who could not read but could count, and the young ones said it was nonsense. Only the miller's boy thought to ask what the figures were for.

"They are the names of the places the seed came from," she said, not looking up from the leeks. "Each place has its own sum. Add them the right way and you know the year the crop will fail."
He laughed, because she was plainly joking, and then he stopped laughing, because in all his years of carrying her flour she had never once joked.
That spring the blight came up the valley and took every field but hers. The boy went to the garden at dusk with a stub of chalk and copied the stripes onto the back of his hand, so that the blight would not know which rows were his. He carried the figures in his head the way his grandmother carried prayers, counting them over until the sum came out even. At first frost he found his own beans still green under the wall, and he understood that the sum had been kept for him all along.
Mother Hesketh pressed her thumb to the chalk on his hand and said nothing. The next morning there was a second packet on the step, already marked, with his name written beneath the figures.
