The last apple tree on Halvard Deck had been dead for eleven years when Ines pressed a bud into my palm and told me to keep it warm. I was twelve. The orchard lights had been dimmed to their winter settings, and the air smelled of wet soil and the ozone from the scrubbers. Nobody thought the old stock would take a graft. Nobody thought anything grew on Halvard anymore except fungus and argument.

We worked in the cold hours, when the shift lamps went amber and the corridor hummed like a fridge. Ines showed me how to cut a sliver of wood the width of a hair and how to match the cambium so the living green met the living green. She talked the whole time, about her mother's orchard on the lower spinward ring, about blossom that fell like snow and stuck to the glass. I remember thinking the stock looked like a bare hand held up to ask for something.

The bud didn't open that winter. It didn't open the next either. I stopped checking it every hour and started checking it every morning, then every shift, and finally I stopped counting altogether. In the spring of my fourteenth year the bark along the join split, and a single leaf came through, pale and creased like a letter folded too long.

Ines was asleep in her bunk. I left her there and sat with the leaf until the lamps turned white, and I did not tell anyone, because some things are better kept warm in the dark for a while longer.
