Bare branch tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph shows a thin, delicate branch with several fine offshoots running from the base of the middle finger up towards the knuckle. The linework is single and even, with no shading, and the lines are drawn in dark ink that stands out against the skin. The hand fills the frame against a soft, dark background, with the tattoo placed as the central focus.

The willow at Haddon Bend had not put out a leaf in the forty years Mab Corley worked the Ouse, and the bargees said it was waiting for someone to ask it why. Mab never asked. She steered the narrowboat Greta past it every Tuesday with a cabin full of coal and a coil of rope she never let fall, and she kept her eyes on the lock gates.

The winter the river froze to the piles, a lad came down the towpath with his hands in his sleeves and asked for passage to the mill. She told him the Greta carried coal, not boys. He sat on the coping stone anyway, and when the ice cracked under the hull that night he was still there, his breath smoking, looking up at the grey branches as if they were writing something he could almost read.

In the morning he had gone, but a single bare twig lay across the tiller, cut clean with a knife. Mab stood it in a jam jar of river water on the shelf above the stove and forgot it until April, when she noticed a green point on it no bigger than a grain of rice.

By May the Haddon willow was in full leaf for the first time in living memory. Mab moored under it, stood on the deck with her hand on the tiller, and said aloud the thing the bargees had waited forty years to hear: that she had come to ask. The branch answered by dropping one small leaf onto the cabin roof, where it lay green and still in the sun.
