Two daisies on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a fine line tattoo on the side of an ankle, showing two daisy-like flowers on slender curving stems. Small leaves and tiny dots are scattered along the stems, with the stems meeting at the base of the design. The thin, even linework is set against pale skin and a dark background, with no shading or colour.

Dear Ivy,

I walked out to Hollin Meadow this morning before the milk round, the way you always said I should, and the daisies had come up through the cut hay as if nobody had ever mown the place. I picked two for you. They're pressed flat inside this envelope now, so they'll arrive looking like something from a schoolbook, but the stems still bend the way they grew, one leaning towards the hedge and the other standing straight as a constable.

You'll want the news from the Palais. Mr Gaskell has finally repainted the ceiling, and the band from Halifax played on Saturday with the drummer missing a thumb, which you'd have found hilarious. Nobody got to dance the last waltz because the lights went out halfway through, and we all stood in the dark listening to Eddie Crane swear at the fuse box. I kept thinking of you there, counting steps under your breath the way you do when you think no one is watching.

Here is the thing I haven't managed to say over the noise of the band. Father has sold the lower field to the Ackroyds, so the meadow will be ploughed by Michaelmas. I don't know where we'll go, only that daisies don't last long once the tractors come. So I'm sending these, and I'm asking you to come home before the first frost, and to bring your good shoes.

Yours, always, Nell
