Bare tree and 'i am.' on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black bare tree with thin, branching limbs sits above the lowercase words 'i am.' in a clean serif-style typeface. Both elements are solid black ink with no shading, set against pale skin. The composition is a close, slightly angled photo of the inner wrist, with the open palm visible above.

Dear Nell, the sycamore came down on Tuesday, the one by the chapel wall that you used to climb before Mother could stop you. The vicar's girl, Ada, who is seven and has opinions, came to watch. She picked a twig from the pile, bare as a bone and forked like a hand, and asked me what it would be now. I said nothing, I suppose. She said trees are only sticks until they remember they're trees, then walked off down the lane sucking a toffee. I thought about that all afternoon, which is ridiculous for a man of my age.
On Thursday I went back to the chapel wall to measure for the stone bench the parish wants, and someone had chalked on the bricks where the trunk had stood: i am. There was a dot after it, neat as a full stop in a schoolbook. Ada, I expect, or the Pritchard boy with his stubs of chalk. I left it there. Nobody will rub it out, I think, and I find I don't want them to.
I am writing to ask whether you still have Dad's pruning saw. Not to cut anything. I only want it hung on the yard wall where I can see it, a reminder of what I was for. Give my love to the girls. Your brother, Tom.
