Bare tree tattoos on both feet

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet, shown from the top, each carry a black tattoo of a bare tree with spreading branches. The right foot's tree has a bird silhouette perched on a lower branch, and the left foot's tree has finer twigs reaching across the toes. The ink is solid black with smooth edges on a light skin tone, and the composition is centred on the feet against a pale background.

Mags Pennock had walked the boundary path for forty years and never once looked up at the two ash trees where it bends around Coldharbour Wood. Her father had called them the parish's oldest argument: one leaned toward Hollin End, the other toward Fenner's Cross, and every spring the rooks fought over which village they belonged to.

This year she was the one who had to decide. The council wanted the wood cleared for a bypass, and the surveyor's stakes were already pale in the bracken. She sat on the stile with a flask of tea gone cold and watched the bare branches, black against a sky the colour of wet paper. A blackbird landed on the lower limb of the eastern tree, fluffed its feathers, and sang one thin phrase before flying off towards the village.

She unfolded the old parish map, soft as cloth from handling, and saw what she had missed for years. The ash trees had been planted in pairs by two brothers who had quarrelled over a single ewe and agreed, in the end, to share a boundary rather than a fence. The line ran between the trunks, not through either one.

Mags folded the map, stood, and walked out to the nearest stake. She worked it loose from the wet ground, carried it back along the path, and laid it down in the bracken beneath the trees, where the rooks could argue about it without her.
