A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in the village of Kestrel Ford could read the word on the copper urn, so when the stranger came down the hill with it wrapped in sacking, the children gathered to watch her set it on the counter. She had walked three days from the coast, she said, carrying the one thing her mother had asked her to bring: a thin brass plate with letters bent into loops, the shape of a river going round stones.

The baker's wife, Ilse Harrow, ran her thumb under the first letter and said it was a B that had forgotten its manners. The stranger laughed and said her mother had called the word barista, which was the name of the person who stood at the machine before the sun and poured the first cup for the people who had to walk to work in the dark. Nobody in Kestrel Ford had ever been called that. They had only ever been called tired.

So the village decided to learn it. Every dawn for a month someone stood at the urn, pulled the lever, and watched the black liquid climb the glass. The shutters came up one by one. Men with flour in their beards stopped at the door and took the cup without speaking, and by the end of the month the word had worn a pale ring into the counter where the brass plate had sat.

When the stranger left, she took the plate back with her. But the first cup of the morning in Kestrel Ford still goes to whoever opens the shutters first, and no one has ever been allowed to call it anything except what it is.
