Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a single continuous infinity loop drawn in black linework, with the word eternal written in flowing cursive across the upper left loop and the word love in cursive across the lower right. The strokes vary in thickness, with a heavier line along the crossing diagonal and finer lines elsewhere. The design is in black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Sit yourself down on that coil of rope, love, and mind the tar. You want to know why the river bends back on itself at Harrow Meadow like a dropped ribbon? My father told it wrong, and his father told it drunk, so you'll have it the proper way.

Tom Garrity worked the Sparrow, a narrowboat with a green cabin and a name he painted himself in letters that wandered uphill. He carried coal one way and cement back the other, and every fortnight he tied up at the loop and wrote to Nell, who kept the lock house on the far side. The water twisted so tight there that a man could row all morning and still see her chimney smoke from the same spot. So he wrote instead. Each letter went into a jam jar with the lid screwed down, and into the current it went, and the river, being lazy, carried it round the bend and left it on her step.
She wrote back the same way. For nine years those jars went round and round, and nobody read them but the two of them and the heron who stood on one leg in the reeds judging the lot.
Then came the winter the floods cut the neck of the loop clean through, and the river straightened itself out like a man who has stopped being stubborn. Tom waited on the new bank with a jar in his fist and found the water was simply too far to throw across. Nell walked the towpath the next morning, and they met at the crossing point where the old loop had pinched closest, and neither of them said much. They didn't need to. Some things you write once and they keep going.
So if you walk out to Harrow Meadow in the dry months, you'll see the old loop, a ring of still water in the shape of a figure of eight. Where the two curves meet there's a patch of reed nobody cuts, and that's where the Sparrow used to tie up. The jars never stopped, love. They just went the long way round, and in that water they're going yet.
