"It is well" script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A flowing script phrase reading "it is well" is drawn in dark grey on a plain white background. The letterforms have long connecting strokes, thick and thin contrast, and looping tails that sweep across the line. The lettering is centred and fills the frame with plenty of white space around it.

The band at the Starlight Rooms always opens with the same slow waltz, and you always let the cloakroom girl take your coat before you have decided whether to dance. Mrs Pargeter at the pay window waves you through without taking your sixpence, which she only does for regulars. You tell her the radiator in the cloakroom is to blame for your cheeks, and she hands you a card anyway, the kind with a stub of pencil tied on a string.

Walter Hale asks you for the third dance. He is a poor dancer with clean hands and a habit of counting under his breath, and he smells of hair oil and the cold yard outside. You let him steer you past the potted palms. He says his mother wrote from Dundee that the herring boats are back in, and you say that is good news, and he says it is, and neither of you mentions the telegram that came in March about his brother, which sits folded in your handbag like a stone.
When the record slips and the needle skips, he stops mid-step, looks at you properly and asks if you are all right. You have rehearsed an answer for weeks, something bright and hard enough to close the subject. Instead you hear yourself say, 'It is well,' the way your gran said it at the graveside, and the words come out softer than you expected, like a coat settling over the back of a chair.
He nods as if that settles it, and the band swings back into the waltz. You let him take your hand again, and for the length of the song you count the steps with him, one, two, three, while the coloured lights turn slowly over the floor.
