Infinity symbol with script blessed

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A single white continuous line forms an infinity symbol that fills most of the frame on a plain black background. The word blessed is written in cursive script along the lower right loop, with the lettering joined to the line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the composition is centred and horizontal.

The wire fence along the top field had been down since February, and Maud Pennock was the only one in Halsey Cross who would walk the boundary with me without complaining about the mud. We went out with a roll of fencing staples and a flask of tea gone cold, and she talked the whole way about her sister's husband, who had sold the ram without asking anyone. I only half listened. I was watching the hedgerow where the old forest path bent back on itself, the way it always has, so that you come out at the same stile you started from if you aren't careful.

We found the break near the beeches. Two posts had leaned over in the wet and taken the wire with them. Maud held the strainer while I hammered, and when I stood up she was staring at the path beyond the stile, where someone had scratched a loop into the bark of a fallen log with a nail. It was a figure eight lying on its side, the line cut so deep and even that the wood still looked pale inside it. Under it, in careful letters, someone had written a single word and then, I think, given up on the rest.

Maud said it was the Hallam boy, who had gone to sea and never come back to take up his father's lease. I said it was nonsense, because nobody in Halsey Cross had ever learned to cut a line that straight. We argued about it all the way home, and neither of us won. I still walk that boundary most weeks. The log is gone now, carted off for kindling, but the stile is still there, and when I come to it I stop and trace the loop in the air with one finger before I go on.
