Barn owl in a foliage wreath on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a barn owl perched on a mossy branch, framed by a circular wreath of fern fronds and leafy stems. The owl is rendered with fine grey linework and soft brown and tan shading, with a pale blue wash behind its head. The close photograph also shows a cream lace bra and part of a torso beside the arm.

Dearest Ada, the Warden sent for me again this morning, and I have decided I will not climb the tower until the owl has finished its business in the granary. You will laugh, but the barn owl has taken the lower beams as its own, and the steward says it has eaten half the rats of the Mere Quarter since the frost. I have been drawing it, as you asked. Every feather I put down is one I do not have to explain to the Chancellor.

The kingdom of Hollin is not what it was. Since the Queen's ferns were cut back to make room for the new canal, the fog rolls in off the reeds every evening and nobody can find the road to the salt pans. Yesterday a ferryman's boy came to the granary asking for the owl, saying it had led his father home through the mist by calling twice from a branch above the causeway. I told him owls do not guide anyone. He looked at me the way Father used to look at a map he did not believe.
Then this morning I found a wreath of fern fronds hung on the granary door, bound with wet grass, with a single grey feather pinned in its centre. Nobody in the village will say who made it, and the steward swears the owl was asleep in the rafters all night.
I have not taken it down. I think the owl is waiting for the canal men to finish before it leaves, and I think, if I am honest, that I am waiting too. Write back soon and tell me whether the moss has come back on the north wall, because if it has, we may yet find our way home by it.
