Owl perched on a branch on the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A barn owl sits upright on a mossy stump, surrounded by fern fronds and sprigs of foliage. The owl is shaded in soft greys and browns with fine feather detail, and a pale blue wash sits behind its head. The tattoo is shown in close framing on the inner upper arm, with a lace bra top and another hand holding the arm at the edge of the frame.

You find the owl on the twelfth floor landing, wedged behind the bin chute where the lagging has come away from the pipes. It is the colour of old porridge, with a face like a dropped plate, and it does not move when the lift doors grind open. Mr Okafor from flat 14 says it has been there since the November storms, and that he has been feeding it mice from the traps in the bin store. You tell him that is not allowed. He tells you the mice were not allowed either.

The council wants it out by Friday. You go up with a pillowcase, a torch and a sandwich box of ham, and on the roof access you find a fern growing out of the cracked render, a green fist pushing up through the felt, the sky behind it the washed blue of a sky before rain. The owl sits on the parapet on a clump of moss that has taken over the old aerial bracket. It watches you the way the estate agent did, as if weighing what you are worth.
You don't bring it down. You sit on the cold step with the box open between you and talk about nothing: the lift, the pigeons, the field edge outside your mother's village in Somerset where barn owls used to hunt at dusk. When it finally drops off the parapet it makes no sound at all, a pale shape against the grey, and it goes out over the car park and the sleeping roads without looking back.
In the morning the man from the council finds only a single feather on the felt and a frond of fern laid across the hatch, tidy as a folded napkin, as if someone had wanted the place left better than they found it.
