Cat portrait tattoo on the side ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A side view of a person in white underwear shows a cat's head tattoo inside an ornate scrolled frame on the side of the ribcage. The cat is rendered with dark outlines and shaded fur in blue, green, brown and cream tones. The wallpaper behind is covered in many small cat faces, and the framing is close to the body with the head and shoulder cropped out.

The snow had closed the pass for nine days, and the innkeeper's widow at Harrow Gill had run out of candles before she ran out of guests. Her cat, a grey-and-black thing with a torn ear called Mother Pell, sat on the warm hearth stone and watched the travellers the way a magistrate watches a queue.

On the tenth night a carter came in with a frozen mule and a cough. He had a box strapped to his back, and when he set it down the widow heard something shift inside. He said it was his sister's cat, which had been sold to him in Kendal for three shillings and a promise. The cat had gone quiet in the cold, he said, and he could not stand to see it so.
Mother Pell crossed the floor without a sound and put her nose to the box's latch. The widow waited for the old hiss, but none came. Instead the cat in the box lifted its head, and the two animals looked at each other for a long while, the way women look across a market when neither will name a price first.
In the morning the carter was gone, the mule was gone, and the box sat by the hearth with its lid open and two cats curled inside it. The widow never learned what the carter had really carried, but Mother Pell kept the box by the fire all that winter, and in spring she moved her kittens into it one by one.
