Wolf before a full moon and pine trees

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A wolf faces the viewer head on, centred in front of a large full moon with soft, cloudy shading. Pine trees form a dark silhouette along the bottom edge, anchoring the composition. The image uses black ink and grey tones only, with fine shading on the fur and sky and bold contrast between the moon and the dark trees.

The wind has taken your lamp twice already, so you stop at the cairn above Gallow Scar to cup a match against it. Behind you the path drops through the pines in black teeth. Ahead, the moon sits so low over the ridge it seems to be resting its chin on the rock. Something moves in the bracken below the road, and you don't reach for the torch, because you know the shape of that grey coat before you see it.

Old Tamsin at the inn told you the wolf came back the winter her husband died, and nobody in Lowder believed her, except the flock-master who lost four ewes and a ram in one night and found none of them torn, only walked away from. She said the wolf wasn't hunting. It was keeping count. You laughed at that in the warm bar. Now the animal lifts its head and looks at you straight on, its eyes catching the moonlight like two chips of ice, and it doesn't look away.

You have a letter in your coat for the station at the top of the pass, the one that tells them the bridge is out and the post won't come until thaw. You had meant to read it aloud at the cairn. Instead you take the paper out, set it on the stone under a flat piece of slate, and step back. The wolf comes down the bank one slow pace at a time, passes the stone without a glance, and climbs into the pines where the trees are blackest.

By morning the letter is gone, and in its place, pressed into the frost on the cairn, are four neat prints, and beside them a single tuft of grey fur caught on the slate. You walk the rest of the pass with the moon still hanging pale over the ridge, and for once the wind is quiet.
