Barn owl perched in a dreamcatcher hoop

Realism · Colour · Flash

A barn owl sits on a branch inside a large circular hoop, with a bare tree branch rising above it. Two smaller hoops hang at the sides and below, each strung with teal feathers and small red and cream beads. The owl is shaded in soft browns, tans and creams with fine linework, while the hoops and feathers use darker ink and muted teal accents on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has already filled the cart ruts by the time you reach the top of Hollin Pass, and the mule has stopped pretending it wants to go on. You tie the lantern to the saddle horn and wait for the bird Marta promised at the inn. 'The barn owl above the col will show you the way down,' she said, wiping her hands on her apron, 'if you're the sort who keeps appointments with birds.'

It comes out of a bare sycamore clinging to the rock, pale as a folded letter in the dark. It settles on a branch inside a great dark hoop and turns its heart-shaped face towards you. Two smaller rings swing from the sides, each strung with teal feathers that stir in air you cannot feel, and red and cream beads that knock together like teeth. You have carried a sealed letter from Marta's brother for nine days, and the owl's steady gaze suggests it has been counting too.

You follow the lantern down the scree, the bird ahead of you, dropping from boulder to boulder and waiting each time for your slow feet. Where the track splits in two, it does not choose a side. Instead it lifts and circles the hoop once, so hard that the feathers fly out like a fan, and then it is gone down the left-hand gully. You take the left. Below, a single light shows in a shepherd's window, exactly where the owl would have wanted it.

At the door a woman opens before you have lifted your hand. A red bead is knotted at her wrist. She takes the letter without asking your name, reads the first line by her own candle, and closes her eyes for a moment. 'He always did send the owl ahead of bad news,' she says, and steps aside to let you in out of the snow. Up on the ridge, the sycamore is still bare, and the hoop is still turning.
