Barn owl realism tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo of a barn owl turned three quarters towards the viewer, with its heart-shaped face, dark eye and speckled pale feathers rendered in fine detail. Soft grey shading builds the wings and body, while the talons grip a dark perch at the bottom of the design. The owl sits centrally on a plain, dark background, with the tattooed forearm filling the frame.

Dear Tom,

The owl came back to the granary last night, the white one with the heart-shaped face that Dad called the Parson. She dropped onto the beam above the sacks as neatly as a coat on a peg and looked down at me with that black eye, the one that never blinks at the lamp. I told her what I tell you in every letter: the barley's in, the pump is leaking again, and Mr Cole still won't pay for the roof. She didn't say anything. She never does, which is why I trust her more than the vicar.
You asked in your last letter whether the loft still smells of tallow and mouse. It does, though there are fewer mice since she took up residence. Dad always said a barn owl can hear a vole under a foot of snow, and I used to think that was one of his stories, like the one about the drowned bell off Shingle Street. Last week I watched her drop from the rafter without a sound and rise with something small and grey. I stood there with the lantern and felt, for once, that I'd done something right.
Here's the strange part. Yesterday the postman brought a parcel with no return address, only a single feather pinned inside the lid, pale and speckled like hers. I've put it in the tin with your birthday card. I don't know if it came from you or from the sea, but I thought you'd want to know the owl is keeping watch.
Keep your eyes on the horizon and your feet dry. I've left the window at the loft's end open so she can come and go as she likes. I leave it open every night.
Nell
