Leopard and rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic leopard head looks out from the top of the design, with its spotted fur, whiskers and detailed eyes rendered in soft shading. A large rose sits beneath it, with layered petals, highlights and smooth grey tonal gradients, and a moth appears at the lower edge. The left and right photos show the same forearm from slightly different angles, with a dark background and everything in black ink and greys.

The leopard had stopped eating the good meat sometime in March, and Ruth had stopped pretending she hadn't noticed. Juno lay along the back of the horsebox with her chin on the rail, watching the lamp that the moths kept throwing themselves at through the vent. The show had shrunk to eleven wagons, then nine, and the posters on the Boston fence had been painted over with an advert for a carpet warehouse.

Ruth's father had bought the big top in 1961 with money from a card game he never explained. He named the cat after a film star and fed her by hand until she bit him on the thumb, which he showed to anyone who would look. Ruth had grown up in the smell of sawdust and diesel and could tell a healthy cat from a sick one by the set of its ears. She could tell now. Mr Harcourt from the council had already come about the field lease, with his clipboard and his patient voice.
On the last night of the season she took a single rose from the florist's bucket by the gate, pale and browning at the edges, and pushed it through the bars. Juno sniffed it, sneezed, and then rubbed her cheek against the stem the way she used to rub against her father's boots.
The moths were still at the lamp when Ruth switched it off. She sat with the cat in the dark until the cold came up through the floorboards, and when the tent crew arrived in the morning to take down the poles, she told them to leave the rose where it was.
