Barn owl with branches and lantern on lower back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A barn owl with spread wings swoops above a lit lantern, with bare branches and small leaves curling around it against an orange and pink sky with a pale moon. The owl is rendered in soft grey and white shading with fine feather detail, while the branches are bold black linework. Warm orange and red tones dominate the background, and the composition is centred and symmetrical across the lower back.

Dad says I'm to stop writing to you in the margins of the feed ledger, but the ledger is the only paper in the barn that isn't damp, so you'll have to put up with it. The frost came in on Tuesday and hasn't left. Every morning the water trough has a lid of ice thick enough to stand a cup on, and Ruth won't take the ewes past the gate until the sun clears the top field.

The owl has taken to the hayloft again. I saw her last night when I went out with the lantern to check the lambing pen, that pale face turning like a dish on a string. Then she dropped off the beam straight down at the lamp and I thought she'd knock it over. She didn't. She hung there with her wings flung wide against the sky, which was the colour of peach skin where the moon was coming up behind the elms, and she looked at me as if I were the one out of place.
I set the lantern on the upturned bucket and sat in the straw with my back to the wall. Nothing moved except the branches of the dead ash outside the door, rattling their few leaves like someone counting coins. Then she came down onto the sill, took one look at my cold hands, and went out without a sound. Grandad always said a barn owl knows where the mice are sleeping and where the people are not. I think he meant it kindly.
Come home at Easter if the roads clear. I'll leave the lantern lit on the sill for you, and if you see the owl, don't try to catch her. Just stand still and let her decide.
Love, Nell
