Owl with spread wings across the upper back
Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large owl with spread wings is tattooed across the upper back, its face filled with dense mandala-like ornament and flower-shaped petals. The feathers are shaded with fine dark linework and soft grey gradients, and sprigs of leaves and small blossoms curve up from either side of the head. The eyes carry a purple tint, the only colour in an otherwise black and grey piece, and the design is centred on the spine with hands resting above it.

The owl dropped onto the fence post at Hollin Lane the night the miller's boy went missing, and you were the only one awake to hear that she made no sound at all. By morning the whole village was out with lanterns, calling his name at the stiles, but you took the old lamp from the back of the cart and walked the other way, past the last cottage where the lane gives up and the beech wood begins.

The trees closed over you like a hand. Under the canopy the air smelt of wet bark and something sweeter, like crushed hawthorn blossom, and the lamp threw your shadow across the roots in long, feathered bars. Halfway up the ridge a feather lay on the path, grey and barred with pale, and beside it a sprig of leaves had curled as though someone careful had drawn it there. You picked up the feather and it was warm.
The boy was sitting against a beech with his knees drawn up and his shoes set side by side, as though he had been told to wait. Above him the owl hung in the branches with her wings spread wide, and her face was a lace of petals and rings, each one fine as a spider's thread. Her eyes were the purple of a bruise going off, and they held yours until you understood she was asking a question. "Who in Hollin Bridge has ever counted what they owe?" she said, though her beak did not move.
You thought of the miller's ledger, its pages full of crossed-out names, and you gave her the only true answer you had: nobody counted anything in Hollin Bridge, they simply waited for the owl to do it. She folded her wings with a sound like a sigh and let the boy stand. "Then carry him home," she said, "and keep the lamp."
At dawn the boy was asleep in his mother's kitchen. The lamp hung on the hawthorn at the stile, its glass cracked, with a single grey feather knotted to the handle, and nobody in the village would say where it had come from.
