Barn owl with ornate crown design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A stylised barn owl stands upright with a heart-shaped mark on its chest and a small word beneath it, wearing an ornate crown of pointed, teardrop-shaped motifs above its head. The linework is fine and even, with dense dotwork filling the face, chest and legs and scale-like patterns on the wing. The image is entirely black ink on white, with no colour and a centred composition.

Now sit down, you lot, and mind the pot, because this is the one about the owl who wore a crown of rain. Her name was Hettie and she lived in the bell loft of St Ebba's, where the sea wind came through the slats and the bats argued all night. Nobody had crowned her. She made the crown herself from the drips off the lead gutters, each drop hardening on her head into a little teardrop, until the whole parish could see it shining at dusk.

The vicar's boy climbed up one winter to nail a board over the gap, and Hettie looked at him the way the tide looks at a sandcastle. He asked why she wore such a heavy thing. She said a crown is only a way of saying you have decided what you are, and she had decided on the night watch, and on the wing.

Her crown went under in the great frost, and the parish said she'd had her day. But she did not go quiet. She sat on the nave rail with a heart of soot pressed on her breast and a word beneath it, the one the boy's grandmother had taught her, and every night she called across the marsh until the fishermen steered home by her voice.

So pass that ladle down, and mind the hot pan, because she still calls over the marsh on the nights the fog comes in, and the boats still come home.
