Bass drum pedal tattoo on a foot
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic tattoo of a bass drum pedal covers the ankle and top of the foot, with its beater, shaft and base rendered in fine detail. The shading uses black ink and soft greys to show metal highlights and depth. A real drum pedal sits beside the foot against a dark grey background, so the tattoo can be compared directly with its subject.

Sit closer, the fire's no good to anyone at the back. You want to hear about the Beater at Saint Aldric's, the treadle the brothers still talk about. Brother Osric built it the winter the bell frame cracked. He had been a cooper before he took his vows, so he knew wood and iron, but the bell would not wait for a man to climb the tower each hour. He made a long ash shaft with a leather-faced hammer at the top and bolted a cast iron plate to the chapel passage floor.

The rule was that whoever rang Lauds stood on that plate, one foot resting on the pivot, pressing down slow and even. The novice Thomas had the foot for longest. He had thin ankles and few words, and the abbot said he kept time like a heron keeps still. Every morning in January the bell sounded before the candles were lit, and the villagers down the hill set their hearths by it, though most of them had no clocks.
Then came the morning the spring snapped. Thomas pressed and got nothing but a dull cough of metal. Osric knelt on the cold stones with a file and a lantern, and when he lifted the plate he found a sparrow's nest packed tight in the spring housing, two blue eggs cracked beneath the brass. He laughed until he had to sit down. The bell rang that day only because Thomas beat out the hours by hand against the frame.
The nest stayed where it was. The Beater lay silent until the young birds flew, and the brothers learned to hear the hours in the gaps between.
