Black banded forearm tattoo
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare forearm is raised towards the top of the frame, with two solid black bands wrapped around it. Each band has a thin white line running along its inner edge, and the lines curve slightly where they meet the skin. The tattoo is black and grey with clean, bold edges, set against a pale wall and a dark curved frame.

Nell Garrow pulled the two black bands up over her sleeve at five to six, pressing the white piping flat with her thumb the way her father had shown her on the Midland line. Hollin Junction was wrapped in fog that had come up off the reservoir before dusk, and the platform lamps made soft yellow smudges that never quite reached the tracks. She checked the board, then the clock, then the board again. The 6.14 goods was already eleven minutes behind and nobody in the signal box had heard from Thornley.

A man in a wet grey coat came down the stairs with a suitcase tied shut by string. He asked her for the last train north. Nell tapped the timetable card pinned under the glass, the one that had been wrong since April, and said the last train north had gone at four and the next would come when the line was clear. He laughed, not unkindly, and asked how she knew it would ever come. She told him the bands on her arm meant she was the one who said when a train could pass, and that was the only thing she was certain of tonight.
When the goods finally crawled out of the cutting, its lamp a red eye in the murk, Nell stepped to the edge of the platform and raised her arm. The black bands stood out sharp against the lamp, the white lines catching the light as her hand swept down and across. The driver flashed his own lamp back once, twice, and the wheels began to grind. Behind her the stranger set down his suitcase and watched the line, and for a moment neither of them spoke.
