Wings, cross and star designs on a temporary tattoo sheet

Mixed · Flash

This sheet shows several temporary tattoo designs on a pale grey background: a pair of detailed angel wings, a solid cross, a gold feather with a trailing tie, a heart made of outlined and filled stars, and a small handwritten word. Two vertical columns of teardrop shapes run down the left side in alternating silver and black with gold edging. The designs use metallic gold, silver and black inks with clean, bold outlines and simple shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The maintenance drone comes apart in your hands before the hatch has finished hissing, and something gold slides from its housing and turns over twice in the recycled air. It is a feather, or near enough, its quill bound in frayed thread the colour of old brass. Nobody on the Carrow Reach has seen a live bird. Your grandmother said the first crew carried a box of them, and that they were the last things the founders chose to keep.

You take it to Mireille in the observation ring, where the stars slide past the glass in their slow drift. She holds the feather up and the spine catches the nearest cluster. "Not a feather," she says. "A key." She runs her thumb along the vanes, and the fine etched lines, tilted against the window, join into a curve the same shape as the sweep of stars the old charts called the Sparrow's Turn.

For three nights you chase that curve across the forward plates, checking every mark against the drive logs, until it ends at a bulkhead stencilled with a plain cross. Behind it is a cold cabinet, and inside, folded flat as card, a pair of wings, silver on one side and black on the other, every feather numbered in pencil. Someone meant them to be worn, not stored.

You do not tell the council. You carry one wing down the spur to the drone bay and fit it to the empty frame of the old repair skiff. When the ship turns its long face toward the dark, the feather in your pocket warms against your palm and points, steady as a compass needle, at the one star on the chart that has never once moved.
