Her brother Kwame laughed when she showed him over cod and chips. 'You'll be wearing a dreamcatcher to your wedding,' he said, pushing a fork through the batter. 'Travel mind, is it? You've never been further than Ramsgate.' She told him that was exactly the point. Every arrow on the sheet pointed north-east, and the peacock eye on the big feather watched her the way their gran used to, as if it knew she was about to do something foolish.

She chose the plain arrow in the end, the one with its tail of thin chevrons, and pressed it to the inside of her wrist. Then she wet the sponge and waited. She sat on the bench until the sun dropped behind the pier, turning her arm so the light ran down the shaft.

Nothing about the afternoon changed her plans. The timetable was still stuck to the fridge and the suitcase was still under the bed. But on Monday she walked to the station with her sleeve pushed up, and when the ticket man asked where she was headed, she answered before she had thought about it at all.
