Sit nearer, the fire has given up on us, so you'll have to lean on me instead. The winter young Tomas Wren got his gold, the snow had shut the lane to the Harrow farm for eleven days, and the only thing that came up it was the post van's tyre marks, which the ice filled in by morning. He'd bought the sheet from a trestle table at Hollin Cross market for two pounds. Shields the colour of a wedding ring, butterflies, chains of little stars, hearts that wanted nothing but to be worn.

He stuck the shields to his wrists and the back of his hand, and he went about the place like a lad who'd been given a crown. He put one on the tractor's dashboard for luck. The tractor wouldn't start, and his father laughed until he had to sit down on the mounting step. Tomas didn't mind. The foil stayed bright in the frost when nothing else did, and he liked to hold his arm up to the lamp and watch the gold take the light.
Then came the night the ewes started lambing in a blizzard. The old grey ewe went down in the drift behind the barn, and the lamb was half out and not moving. Tomas tore off his coat, scooped the lamb into his jumper, and ran for the kitchen with the lantern swinging. When he got it breathing by the range, he looked down and saw the gold chain of stars had come loose across his palm, and the shield on his chest had smeared white. The foil had never made him any stronger. It had only caught the light, and the light had been the lantern all along.
The next spring the last star was still stuck to the gatepost at the top of the lane. When the sun dropped low it caught there, a small bright thing, and the lamb with the white blaze came down the field to see what it was.
