A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler would not lift his bow until the boards were swept, and the boards were never swept until Nell Haddow had walked the length of the Mill Hall with her tin of gold leaf. Her grandmother had taught her the old way: cut the paper into triangles, rows of them, then press each one flat with a warm thumb so it held. Diamonds for the married, lines for the widowed, and black for anyone who had lied in the hall that year. Nobody remembered who had decided that.

That autumn the silver would not take. Nell pressed and pressed the grey diamonds onto the boards and they peeled up like wet skin, curling by the stove. The lads from the foundry laughed and said the hall was tired of being decorated. Nell said nothing and kept cutting. On the night of the harvest dance she laid the last row near the door, where the cold came in, and waited for the fiddle to start.

The first reel was slow. Halfway through, the gold began to lift, a row at a time, and drift up off the floor like thin leaves into the rafters, where it caught the lamplight and turned the ceiling into a sky full of small bright shapes. The dancers stopped and looked up. The fiddler kept playing because his bow arm would not let him stop.

By morning the floorboards were bare and clean, swept by no one. Only the silver remained, curling in the corners, and the black lines had sunk into the grain so deep that the young dancers stepped over them without knowing they were there. Nell went home with her thumb still warm and her tin empty, and the hall above her kept its sky.
