Be the Change lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a close view of a wrist with the words BE THE CHANGE in two lines, the first line above the second, in uneven, hand-drawn capital letters. The black ink is solid with slightly rough edges, and the greyscale image gives the lettering strong contrast against the skin. Beaded bracelets and a knitted cuff sit around the wrist, and the background is softly blurred.

The toll box on Carrick Pass had not held enough silver to make change since the spring floods, and Ivy Dunn had stopped apologising for it. When the carrier's lorry pulled up at dusk with a fifty-pound note held out like a summons, she only shook her head and reached for the tin under the window.

The driver swore, reversed a yard, and asked whether she had ever heard of a card. She had. She also had a cold kitchen, a dog called Moss who would not leave the step, and the knowledge that the next village was nine miles down the far side of the hill. So she slid the pewter bangle off the hook by the door, took the two old pennies threaded through its loop, and pressed them into his palm with the last coppers from the tin. She told him the road was clear to Kirkby if he kept his lights on for the hairpin.
He went. Ivy sat on the step with Moss and counted what remained, which was nothing, and felt foolish until a sheep bell rang somewhere below and a second van came grinding up the pass, its headlamps stopping short of the barrier. The driver was Tom Ashby from the bakery, and he held out a fistful of coins. "Lad in the lorry says you were short," he said. "Said you let him through for less than the bend was worth."
By morning the tin was full again, and the pewter bangle hung back on its hook, heavier by a penny, with a small grey dent where the pennies had been.
