Things change script lettering design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words things change written in a loose, joined handwritten script in thin black line. The strokes are even and delicate, with the letters connected by long flowing tails across the width of the frame. The plain white background and single black ink give it a stencil-like, drawn-design appearance.

Sit yourself down, child, and mind the wasps, they've had the windfalls since dawn and they are not sharing. You want the tale of the Harrow orchard? Then pass me that knife and an apple, because I'll not tell a story with my mouth gone dry.

Ada Harrow and her sister Nell put the trees in the ground the summer before Nell left for Leeds on the back of a carrier's cart. They grafted a bough each onto the rootstock, and tied a wooden label to every sapling with a name written on it. Ada's took straight away. Nell's sulked for two years before it bore a single apple, and hers was the label that said things change, which was what their mother used to say whenever the milk turned in the pantry.
Nell sent postcards from places with trams and lamp-lit bridges, and Ada kept the orchard going on her own. Years went by the way apples fall, one at a time and then all at once. The great wind came in the winter Ada turned seventy and took the old Bramley by the gate clean off its roots. When she split the trunk for kindling she found Nell's label nailed inside the bark, the letters swollen and grey, the wood grown right over them.
Nell came back in September with a single suitcase and sat on the wall where you're sitting now. Ada handed her a knife and a scion from the one bough that had survived the storm. Neither of them said much while they worked. When the graft was bound and the new label tied on, Nell read it aloud, and the words sounded like something they had both finally agreed on.
