Anatomical heart with quote on palm
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a hand held palm outwards, with a shaded anatomical heart in the centre. The words 'Hold My Heart' arc above the heart and 'He's Beating for You Anyways' run below it, in dark hand-drawn lettering. The blurred background and monochrome tones keep the focus on the palm.

The boatwright's wife had buried three sons before the fourth could walk, so when her youngest went out past the reef at twelve she pressed a clay heart into his palm. It was a poor thing, fired too quick, with a crack down one side. "Hold my heart," she said, "and bring it back warm."

The storm came off the water at noon and the boat went over its own shadow. Essa kept the clay in his fist through the night, and when the waves struck the hull the thing knocked against his ribs inside the cloth bag round his neck, the way a bird knocks at a shutter. He thought it was his own blood he heard. By dawn he had decided it was the timbers groaning, and by the time he could see the headland he had stopped thinking about it at all.
On the shingle his mother was waiting, though it was not yet light and she had walked the cliff path in her slippers. She took his hand, turned it over and found the heart there, still damp. "Who was it beating for?" she asked. He did not understand her. She laughed, pressed her thumb into the crack, and the clay opened like a mussel to show a small grey pebble from the beach where she had first held him.
He was still staring at it when she closed his fingers over it again. "Nothing in there was ever yours, love," she said. "It was beating for me all along, and it was never going to stop."
