Small angled line tattoo on hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows a hand raised in a V sign, with the fingers angled towards the left of the frame. A small, thin, angled line tattoo sits on the skin at the base of the index and middle fingers. The linework is crisp and dark, and the soft grey background keeps the focus on the hand.

Tuesday, 14 October. Water down another two inches since Sunday, and Mr Okafor's narrowboat, the Patience, is stuck on the sill at Hartwell Lock again. I told him what I tell everyone: the V cut into the gate post is worth more than any gauge the Trust sends down from London. The mark sits where the water met the timber in the great flood of '47, and my father cut it with a chisel he kept in his coat for forty years.

Wednesday. Rain all morning, and the river came up a finger's width by noon, which I wrote in the book and then argued with myself about. Nell from the chandlery brought round a loaf and asked whether it was true the old marks were going to be painted over. I said nothing gets painted over on my watch. She looked at the angled line on the gate and said it looked less like a level and more like someone pointing up the river, telling the water where to go.
Thursday. Took the Patience through on the rising water myself, with Okafor at the tiller swearing softly in two languages. At the sill the hull lifted and kissed the top of the gate, and for one breath the whole barge hung level with the mark. I held my breath too. Then the gates groaned, the water came up, and we slid out into the reach beyond.
Friday. Went down to the gate with a fresh chisel and a tin of paint, meaning to freshen the line. Stood there a long time instead. Some marks show where the water was, and some show where it could go. I left it as it was and wrote this down instead, so that whoever reads the book after me knows which one it is.
