Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A walking bear in profile is outlined in bold black, with its body filled by a row of dark pine trees against a sky shading from purple to orange and red. The bear's head and shoulders are rendered in warm orange tones with soft gradients, while the lower body fades into magenta. The design fills the forearm horizontally and is shown against a plain grey background.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fire, because this is the part where my grandmother always stopped and waited for someone to ask what happened next. Nobody asks. Fine. In the kingdom of Varrowmere, which is not on any map you will be handed, the sunset belonged to the bears. Not owned, mind. Lent. The bears did the lending, and they expected the valley to remember it.

Every autumn the old bear Tessaly walked down from the high pines carrying the evening on her back. Her shoulders caught the light first, then the red crept down her legs until she seemed to wade through embers, and the dark pines stood up out of her fur as if a whole wood had decided to ride along. The folk of Brack went out to meet her with bread and comb honey, because a bear who carries the sunset leaves the valley warm through the winter.
One year the bridge-keeper's daughter, Ilse Corran, a girl who could never sit still, climbed the ridge to find where the light came from. She found Tessaly lying in the bracken, her coat gone grey at the edges. "The sun grows heavier every year," the bear said. "Someone must walk the forest home with me, or the evening forgets its shape."
Ilse did not go back for the bread. She walked beside the bear all the way down to the lowland with pine needles caught in her hair, and when they reached Brack the sky behind them was the deepest red anyone had seen. The next autumn two bears came down the ridge instead of one, and a girl walked between them with a lantern, certain as anything that the evening would know its own way home.
