Bear silhouette with Golden Gate Bridge on thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bear silhouette fills the design, with a red suspension bridge, tall pine trees, a snowy mountain and a blue sky with clouds shown inside its outline. Orange poppies sit along the lower body and near the back of the bear, and the shading is smooth and painterly. Bright blue, red, orange and green ink dominate against pale skin, with the design wrapping across the upper thigh.

Two summers before the big orange bridge was strung across the Gate, a grizzly came down out of the pines above Mount Tamalpais with a poppy caught in the fur behind his shoulder. Nobody had told him there was no room left for bears in that country. He walked the ridge where the fog came in like wet wool, and he stopped at the edge of the hills to watch the men on the scaffolding. Iron rose out of the water in two red towers, and the wires went up between them like a harp being tuned by someone very patient.

A girl named Ada Brannock sold tickets in the ferry shed, and she saw him each morning from the window, grey-muzzled and sure of himself. She left a dish of bread crusts on the wall. By the time the cables were hung, the bear had learned to wait for her whistle, and the riggers swore he could count the rivets.

The night they opened the bridge, the whole city crowded the approach, and the bear walked out along the deck in the dark, slow, his shadow falling across the lamps. Nobody fired a shot. Someone started to dance, and then everyone was dancing, and the bear sat down at the middle of the span and looked back at the lights as if he had built them himself. Next morning the wall was bare except for the crusts, and on the far hill the poppies had opened as though they had been waiting for him.
