Bearded wizard portrait on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows an elderly bearded wizard in a pointed, wide-brimmed hat, with a long, flowing beard and hair. It is rendered as a detailed portrait with soft grey shading across the face and hat, and fine strands of the beard picked out in light brown. The tattoo fills the upper arm, with the figure's head near the shoulder and the beard extending down the arm against a plain background.

Dear Mrs Okafor, you will not remember me, but I was the boy who sat under the piano in Year Nine and cried when the drama cupboard flooded. I am writing because the reunion committee has asked everyone to bring something from school, and I have brought the beard.

It is not a real beard. It is a mop head, dyed grey with cold tea and combed out with a fork, stitched to an elastic band by Mr Dunmore the year we did the Christmas play. He was meant to be the wizard, but he had broken his ankle on the sports field, so I was given the hat, the staff made from a broom handle, and the beard, which I wore for two performances before it went missing.

I found it last month in the loft, behind a box of marked exercise books. Someone had pinned a note to it that read 'Property of Greenfield Drama, do not wash'. I laughed out loud in my kitchen. Then I sat down on the stairs, because the note was in Mr Dunmore's handwriting, and he has been dead since March.

I still have the hat. It is tucked in my wardrobe, slightly crushed. Bring the beard on Saturday if you can. Stand near the bar, and I will know you by it.
