Furry creature peering over a stone wall
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large-eared creature with shaggy red-brown fur and grey skin rests its arms on a stone wall, with a wooden ladder on the left side. The shading is smooth and painterly, with soft highlights on the fur and skin and careful modelling on the stones. Ink colours include reds, greys and muted yellows, and the composition is centred on the creature's face and upper body.

Above Hollin Pit the wall was older than the men who dug beside it. Nobody in Scarrow Dale could say who had laid the stones, only that they had been laid to keep something out, and that the something had been content to stay on its side for three hundred years. My grandmother called it the Warden, though she never said the word within earshot of the shaft captain.

It was big in the way a bullock is big, shaggy red as rust from crown to haunch, with ears that stood out like the flaps of a winnowing sieve. It did not climb the wall. It leaned on the top course with its grey hands folded, as a man leans on a gate, and it watched the village come and go. When a roof slate loosened in the rain, there would be a new one on the step by morning. When a child wandered past the old quarry, it was found sitting on the lowest rung of the ladder, waiting for its mother.
In the winter of the flood, Tom Ashby carried a lamp and a bag of lime up the ladder to mend the cracks, and he did not come down until dawn. Nobody asked him what had passed between him and the creature. He only said the wall was sound, and that it had asked after the miners' children by name.
After that the men left a loaf on the top rung every Sunday. The creature took it, and the wall held.
