Howling wolf with leaves design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A wolf throws its head back and howls, with a partial circle of moon above it. Leaves of several shapes, some with hatched shading and others outlined, fill the space around the wolf and curl along its body. The drawing uses thin, even black linework with cross-hatching for shading, and it is shown in black ink on cream paper without colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told the wolf would come down from the fell when the beech leaves turned, and it did, on the third night of October, howling at the rim of the moon so loudly the hens went quiet in the Hartley coop. Her father stood in the doorway with the lamp and said nothing, which was how he said most things.

The village had a rule older than the chapel: whoever heard the howl first had to answer it, or the wolf would take the last warm thing in the house. Nobody remembered why. Nell's grandmother had said it was about the leaves, that a wolf could not be seen by anyone busy gathering, so the howl was a call to stop and look up. Nell had never believed a word of it until she saw the leaves in the lane lift all at once, as if someone had breathed under them.

She took the tin whistle from the dresser, went out in her stockings, and blew the three falling notes her grandmother had taught her. The howl answered from higher up, closer than she expected, and something pale slid between the hedges, broad-shouldered and unhurried, shedding leaves with every step. It did not come for the hens. It stopped at the gate and lowered its head, and the leaves gathered round its feet like a coat being offered.

In the morning her father found the latch open and a single maple leaf pinned to the step, veined in gold and sharp as a fishbone. He pressed it into the family Bible at the page where the births were written, and he never once asked Nell what she had said to the wolf, and she never once told him she had said nothing at all.
