Believe script on the inner wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo spells the word Believe in a flowing script, with a large capital B in red and the remaining letters in black. The linework is smooth and even, with the thin strokes and swirling tails of a handwritten style. The photograph is taken straight on, with the word centred on a pale forearm and a dark sleeve behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Thaïs, the master has finally let me touch the vermilion. For three winters I have ruled lines and mixed the black from lamp soot and gum, and he would not trust my hand with anything but the ink. Yesterday he set the red pot before me and said the initial of the new codex was mine to make, provided I did not blot it.

The word is one I have copied a hundred times without thinking: a single word on the first leaf, the one the patron wants pinned above his door. Believe. The master wanted the B large and red, so the eye would find it before anything else, and the rest of the letters to run away from it in black, loose and quick, with tails that curl back as if they were reluctant to end. I spent the whole morning on the bowl of that B alone. My first attempt looked like a fish somebody had sat on.

Here is the part I cannot tell the master. When the B finally came right, with the red sitting just proud of the black and the strokes even on both sides, I sat back and felt more certain of something than I have ever felt about the gods or the tax men. The patron will read the word and think of his own affairs, not of my hand. That is as it should be. A letter is only ever a door, and I am happy to have built the hinge.

I am sending this with the carter, so you will have it before the flood season. Tell Mother the B is better than anything I did at her table. Your brother, Hermias.
