Believe script on a wrist
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
A photograph of the word Believe in flowing cursive script across a pale wrist. The capital B is in pink and the remaining letters are in dark ink, with smooth, continuous strokes and a looped flourish on the final letters. The background is a blurred grey tiled surface, and a hand with light nails appears at the left edge of the frame.

Ruth, the water recyclers are down again and Tomasz has been up since four trying to coax the pump back to life with a spanner and a hymn. I am writing this on the back of a ration chit because the paper stock went to the seedbank last month, so you will have to forgive the smudges.

Yesterday I went down to Deck Six to see the word on the bulkhead that the first crew painted when we left Earth orbit. You remember it, the one with the pink B that Dad said looked like a kite caught in a hedge. Someone repainted it this week, badly, and the flourish on the last e has run into the grey like a river into a delta. I stood there with my torch and read it three times, and it did not seem like a slogan any more. It seemed like an instruction, written by someone who knew we would need reminding.
So I did what you would have done. I scraped the old flakes off with my thumbnail, found a pot of dark enamel in the stores, and went over the strokes slowly, keeping the curves as smooth as I could manage. It took all afternoon. Halfway through, a girl from the nursery came and sat beside me and asked why we were painting a word nobody could eat. I told her it was the only thing on the ship that promised the morning would come.
Write back soon. Tell me the kids on Ceres are still arguing about the moon.
